James Jennings has taken a nontraditional path to graduation, one defined by hard work, resilience, and a passion for learning.

After being homeschooled, James earned his GED while working for UPS and in other manual labor jobs. It didn’t take long for him to realize that education would be the key to building the future he envisioned. With that in mind, he enrolled at Dallas College with the goal of earning his associate degree in Automotive Technology.

After completing his degree, James was hired by Audi, where he spent four years building his skills in the field. But like many, his journey was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in a layoff. Instead of viewing it as a setback, James used the time to invest in himself—successfully completing multiple ASE certification tests and ultimately earning the distinction of ASE Master Technician.

During that period of transition, James made a life-changing decision. He shifted his career focus toward education, driven by a desire to give back and help others succeed. He began teaching high school automotive technology, eventually joining ECISD as a dual credit instructor, where he now teaches 10th through 12th grade students.

Working with students every day and watching them grow, learn the science behind automotive technology, and apply their skills has been deeply rewarding. That experience also reignited his own academic ambitions.

“I like problem solving, learning, and going to school … a lot!” James said enthusiastically.

For the past two years, James has balanced his full-time teaching responsibilities with his own studies, successfully completing his Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences in Automation at Odessa College.

And he’s not finished yet.

James is already exploring master’s programs, with a long-term goal of earning a doctorate degree, continuing the same commitment to growth and learning that has defined his journey so far.

Odessa College is proud to celebrate James Jennings and the example he sets for his students and community.
