Odessa, TX – Odessa College is proud to announce that our very own Sonny Alaniz has been selected as a 2025 DREAM Scholar by Achieving the Dream (ATD), a national organization dedicated to advancing community colleges as centers of learning, credentialing, and economic mobility. Sonny is one of only eight students from ATD Network colleges across the nation—and beyond—who have been recognized for their leadership, resilience, and commitment to student success.
The DREAM Scholars program provides selected students with unique leadership development and networking opportunities. Sonny will attend DREAM 2025, ATD’s annual convening in Philadelphia, where he will share his personal journey, offer insights on supporting today’s community college students, and highlight his aspirations for the future.
“Sonny Alaniz exemplifies the dedication and perseverance that define Odessa College students,” said Keagan Scott, Positively OC Presidential Scholarship Faculty Advisor and Executive Director of Student Life. “We are thrilled that he has been chosen as a DREAM Scholar and will have the opportunity to share his story on a national stage. His achievements inspire us all and reflect Odessa College’s commitment to fostering student success.”
During the conference, Sonny and his fellow DREAM Scholars will engage with community college leaders, participate in sessions focused on student success strategies, and deliver individual presentations. These experiences will allow them to not only learn from experts in higher education but also to contribute their own perspectives on improving student outcomes. Additionally, each scholar will receive a scholarship to support their educational and personal goals.
The DREAM Scholars program is a transformative experience, designed to amplify student voices and equip them with the skills necessary to be leaders in their communities. The scholars, chosen through a rigorous application process, have demonstrated exceptional resilience and a passion for making a difference. This year’s cohort includes students from a diverse array of backgrounds and academic disciplines, all united by their commitment to education and social change.
